Dr. Kamel Meets Lord Carter in the UK
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Tarek Kamel met today in the British capital London Lord Stephen Carter, UK’s Minister of Communications, Technology and Broadcasting.
Dr. Kamel has been in an official mission to the UK to participate in Euromoney 2009 conference entitled “Egypt: The Investors Conference”.
During the meeting, Dr. Kamel and Lord Carter conferred means of boosting bilateral cooperation in the field of information and communications technology (ICT).
Lord Carter praised Egypt’s proven record in internet governance, affirming the UK’s support to Egypt in the fourth Internet Governance Forum (IGF) meeting due to be held in Egypt, Sharm El-Sheikh in November 2009.
Both parties further discussed issues of common interest including cyberspace security, protecting children from internet crimes, multilinguism and domain names on the web. Minister Kamel invited Lord Carter to visit Egypt.
In addition, the meeting highlighted the role of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and its cooperation with international organizations and means of boosting international participation in the internet governance domain. Egypt’s Ambassador to the UK attended the meeting.
Separately, Dr. Kamel convened with Lesley Cowley, Chief Executive of Nominet. Dr. Kamel and Ms. Cowley tackled the UK’s experience in managing domain names and collaborating in cybersecurity to facilitate internet safety for all social segments. Ms. Cowley confirmed Nominet’s keenness to contribute to the upcoming IGF meeting.
Meanwhile, Minister Kamel had announced in his speech before the Euromoney conference the scheduled visits of Microsoft Corp. Chairman and that of Vodafone to Egypt in April and May, 2009.
