With only 7 days remaining, millions of Canadians still do not have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

Toronto, Ontario, Sept. 8

Fewer than 2 million Canadian boaters had licences by early 2009 with an estimated 7 to 8 million boaters in Canada.

Transport Canada set September 15th, 2009 as the deadline for boaters to get their Canadian Boating License or face a $250 fine.

Right now the test can be taken online in as little as 45 minutes answering 36 multiple-choice questions with a 75 percent correct response rate for a pass. Cards issued today are good for life.

The government is in the process of overhauling the testing procedure so it is uncertain if getting a card after the deadline will become more difficult. There could very well be price increases for the card after the September 15th deadline as well.

When it was launched in 1999, the goal of the program was to improve recreational boating safety and reduce boating accidents, which account for about 33 per cent of water-related deaths in Canada.

The Boating License will be mandatory in the following Canadian provinces: Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC , Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I.
