Rules on overseas doctors inadequate says Lamb

“Liberal Democrats will ensure that every foreign-trained doctor can prove they are able to communicate with patients and safe to work in the NHS,” said the Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary.

Commenting ahead of the Health Select Committee report today on the employment of foreign doctors in the NHS, Norman Lamb, said:

“Patient’s lives have been put at risk because foreign doctors have been allowed to work in the NHS without any assessment of their language or medical skills.

“Labour has known for some time that the current safeguards in place are not working but has completely failed to take action.

“Liberal Democrats will ensure that every foreign-trained doctor can prove they are able to communicate with patients and safe to work in the NHS.”

  1. We need to ensure that all front line medical staff, practising in the UK, are able to communicate effectively with patients.
    I agree that doctors should have to undergo English tests to prove their English language skills.
    I own a company whose primary purpose is to teach English to speakers of other languages.
    We provide IELTS(International English Language Testing Systems)tuition in Birmingham and are receiving an increasing number of enquiries from medical professionals who wish to book private lessons in order to improve their English.
